Alcohol and Erectile Dysfunction: How Many Pegs Is Too Many, and Can You Recover?
Published 8 Aug 2026 · Updated 2 Oct 2026 · 9 min read
Short answer
Yes, alcohol can cause erectile dysfunction. A few drinks can blunt erections and delay ejaculation that same night, and years of heavy drinking can damage nerves, lower testosterone, strain the liver and worsen mood. The good news: in many men erections improve within weeks to months of cutting down. A 30 mL peg is roughly one standard drink.
Can alcohol cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Alcohol can cause erection problems on the night you drink, and regular heavy drinking over months and years can cause lasting erectile dysfunction (ED). The two situations are different, and so is the outlook for each.
A drink or two does not harm most men, and many feel more relaxed and less nervous with it. The trouble starts as the amount rises. Alcohol is a depressant of the nervous system, and an erection needs a clear signal from the brain, healthy nerves and good blood flow. Alcohol interferes with all three, and the more you drink, the stronger the effect.
What is "whisky dick" and why does it happen?
"Whisky dick" is the popular name for failing to get or keep an erection after drinking too much, and it happens because alcohol dulls the brain-to-penis signalling that an erection depends on. It is a temporary, common experience and not a sign that something is permanently wrong.
- Several drinks
- Brain and nerve signals slow down
- Sensation drops, arousal is harder to build
- Blood flow into the penis is weaker
- Soft or fading erection that night
- Dulled nerves and brain: the message "you are aroused" travels more slowly, so the erection starts late, stays soft or fades.
- Anxiety loop: after one failed night, many men worry the next time, and that worry alone can stop an erection. Our guide on performance anxiety and ED explains this loop.
If it happened once or twice after a heavy night, that is the alcohol, not ED. ED means the problem is repeated for about three months or more even when you have not been drinking. Our main guide to erectile dysfunction causes, symptoms and treatment covers how it is diagnosed.
Does alcohol cause delayed ejaculation?
Yes, alcohol is a well-known cause of delayed ejaculation, where ejaculation takes a very long time or does not happen even with enough stimulation. It works the same way: the nerves that trigger ejaculation respond more slowly when they are under the influence of alcohol.
How does long-term heavy drinking damage sexual health?
| What is affected | What happens | Effect on sex |
|---|---|---|
| Nerves | Long-term alcohol use can damage the nerves in the hands, feet and genital area (alcoholic neuropathy), often with tingling or numbness | Reduced sensation and weaker erection signals |
| Testosterone | Heavy drinking can lower testosterone and affect the testicles | Low desire, weaker erections, smaller testes in some men |
| Liver | A damaged liver cannot handle hormones properly, so the balance of male and female hormones shifts | Low desire, ED, breast tissue growth in some men |
| Mood | Depression and anxiety are more common in heavy drinkers, and alcohol makes both worse over time | Low interest in sex, performance worry, poor sleep |
Heavy drinking also tends to travel with other things that hurt erections: smoking or gutka, poor food, little exercise, weight gain, high blood pressure and a higher risk of diabetes. If you smoke or chew tobacco as well, read our guide on smoking, gutka and ED, because the two habits stack. Low testosterone is also worth checking, and we explain how in low testosterone symptoms, treatment and diet.
Can erectile dysfunction from alcohol be reversed?
In many men, yes. Erections often improve within weeks to a few months of cutting down or stopping, especially when the cause is the drinking itself and not a long-standing disease.
- Early or moderate problem: erections, sleep and mood commonly get better in the first one to three months. Testosterone can also recover in some men once the drinking drops.
- Long-standing heavy drinking: recovery is slower and may be partial, particularly if there is nerve damage or advanced liver disease. These need medical treatment, not just willpower.
How many pegs are too many? A guide in Indian pegs
In India a standard small peg is 30 mL of spirit, and that is roughly one standard drink (about 10 grams of pure alcohol). Many bars and homes pour 60 mL, which is two drinks, so count the glass, not the number of rounds.
| What you drink | Approx. standard drinks |
|---|---|
| 30 mL peg of whisky, rum, vodka or brandy (about 40% alcohol) | About 1 |
| 60 mL large peg | About 2 |
| Quarter bottle (180 mL) of spirits | About 6 |
| 650 mL beer bottle (about 5%) | About 2.5 |
| 650 mL strong beer (about 8%) | About 4 |
These are estimates, because brands and strengths differ, but they make the point: a "quarter" is not a light evening. As a rough guide for men, health bodies suggest staying within about two standard drinks on a day you drink, with several alcohol-free days a week. Less is better, and for some people, such as those with liver disease, on certain medicines or with a history of dependence, none is safest.
Can you take ED medicines with alcohol?
A small amount of alcohol is usually not dangerous with ED tablets, but heavier drinking raises the risk of dizziness, low blood pressure and fainting and also makes the tablet work less well. The safest plan is to ask your doctor, because the answer depends on your heart and your other medicines.
Does a peg help you last longer? Alcohol and premature ejaculation
A peg does not treat premature ejaculation (PE). It may blunt sensation for some men, but it also weakens erections, makes timing unpredictable, and can turn into a habit you need before every attempt.
- Dependence: if you start needing a drink to have sex, anxiety usually gets stronger, not weaker, because you never learn that you can manage without it.
- Proper options exist: a doctor may advise dapoxetine (approved for PE in India and many other countries, though not by the US FDA), a daily SSRI such as paroxetine, or numbing sprays with lidocaine or prilocaine, along with behavioural methods.
Dapoxetine typically makes ejaculation take about two to three times longer. All of these are prescription treatments. See our PE treatment guide for India and the article on ED and PE together for what works at what age.
How can you cut down on alcohol? Practical steps for Indian life
- Count in pegs, not bottles. Write down what you drank for two weeks. Most men are surprised by the total.
- Set alcohol-free days. Aim for at least three to four days a week with none, and mark them in your phone.
- Drink water or soda between rounds, and eat first. Snacks like roasted chana, paneer tikka, salad or dal before drinking slow the pace. Skip the chakna that is only fried and salty.
- Plan the office, wedding and festival drinks. Say "I am driving" or "doctor said no", and hold a nimbu pani or sparkling water so people stop offering.
- Fix the late-night shift trap. If you drink to switch off after night shifts, try a walk, a shower, tea without sugar or a fixed bedtime routine first. Alcohol makes sleep lighter and worse, even if it helps you drop off.
- Deal with stress directly. If you drink to cope with family or money pressure, our article on stress, ED and PE has practical ideas.
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if erection problems continue for a few weeks even on days you do not drink, if you cannot cut down by yourself, or if you notice tingling, low desire or low mood. Getting checked early matters, because new ED can also be an early sign of diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease.
- Erection trouble that is there on sober days as well.
- Numbness, tingling or burning in the feet or hands.
- Yellow eyes, swelling of the belly or legs, dark urine or easy bruising. These can point to liver trouble and need urgent care.
- Sadness, constant worry or thoughts of self-harm. Please talk to someone today.
Myth vs fact
Myth A peg or two helps you last longer in bed.
Fact It may blunt sensation for some men, but it also weakens erections and makes timing unpredictable. It does not treat PE, and it can become a crutch.
Myth Beer is harmless compared with whisky.
Fact What matters is the total alcohol. A 650 mL beer is about two to three standard drinks, so a few bottles can equal many pegs.
Myth If alcohol caused my ED, it is permanent.
Fact In many men erections improve within weeks to months of cutting down. Recovery can be slower or partial after years of heavy drinking with nerve or liver damage, but it is still worth treating.
Myth ED tablets cancel out the effect of alcohol.
Fact They do not. If you are drunk the tablet cannot fix dulled nerve signals, and the combination can add to dizziness and low blood pressure.

Does drinking alcohol every day cause erectile dysfunction?
Drinking heavily every day raises the risk of ED over time through nerve damage, lower testosterone, liver strain and low mood. Light drinking is much less likely to cause it. If you drink daily and have erection trouble, a check-up and a plan to cut down are the right first steps.
How many pegs of whisky are okay if I have ED?
There is no single safe number. As a rough guide, keep to about two 30 mL pegs on a day you drink, with several alcohol-free days a week, and discuss with your doctor whether you should avoid it completely. Large 60 mL pours count as two pegs each.
Can I take Tadalafil or Sildenafil after drinking?
Only if your doctor has prescribed it, and best with little or no alcohol. Heavy drinking with these tablets can cause dizziness, headache and a drop in blood pressure, and it makes them work less well. They must never be taken with nitrate medicines.
How long after stopping alcohol do erections improve?
Many men notice better erections, sleep and mood within a few weeks, and further gains over the next two to three months. Recovery can be slower if there is nerve damage, liver disease, diabetes or low testosterone, which need their own treatment.
Does alcohol cause premature ejaculation or delay it?
Alcohol is more often linked with delayed ejaculation and weaker erections than with lasting longer in a reliable way. Using a drink to control PE is unreliable and can become a habit. PE has proper treatments that a doctor can prescribe.
